King Street Mixed-Use
Commercial Retail and Short – Term Rental ApartmentsThe site fronts Charleston’s bustling commercial corridor of King Street, but is located in an area that lacks continuity and is adjacent to a highway overpass. The proposed building’s design seeks to reestablish the rhythm of the more historic context to the south through a simple but fresh approach.
A series of storefronts, pilasters, and bays breaks down the massing of the building into more individual Charleston proportions. Traditional Lowcountry materials of wood and brick are used, detailed in a more contemporary manner and with less common colors. Great care was taken to ensure that the views from the elevated highway are just as pleasing as the main street facade.
The resulting design, clearly of its time, provides a comfortable and familiar pedestrian experience and re-connects the fabric of this important street.
