1426 Meeting Street Office

Commercial Office

This two story office building is located in an emerging area within the upper peninsula of the city of Charleston.

The diverse industrial context–specifically the common presence of stacked shipping containers, a very active train line, and numerous surrounding utilitarian support buildings–inspired the design of the new building. The monochromatic approach to the building references containers and their simple paint schemes.

Coupled with black metal panels, the dark rainscreen material is detailed with rough-textured Shou Sugi Ban accents reminiscent of the gritty nature of the area.

The arrangement and combination of these materials relates to the site’s very active context and suggests a movement of overlapping building portions peeling away, exposing the other materials as if they were all separate layers dependent on one another.

The materials and form of the building are reflective of the design inspiration and provide a progressive, thoughtful design within a very limited budget.
